Michigan 3-day Cordwood Workshop in August. We're doing a 3-day Cordwood Workshop with ISLAND (Institute for Sustainable Living, Art and Natural Design) at Bellaire, Michigan, August 20-22, 2010. New York: September workshop at Earthwood. There is plenty of space at both our 3-day Cordwood workshop, September 3rd to 5th, and the Earthwood Tewchniques workshop on Labor Day, September 6th. And, as a result of a cancellation, La Casita (Cordwood Cabin)is now available again. Go to Workshops for more info.
February 19-22, 2011 Workshops on Hawaii's Big Island ... is now firm. There will be a 3-day Cordwood Masonry Workshop (February 19-21) followed by a one-day Earthwood Techniques workshop on February 22.. Last time we were there - several years ago now - we had a great workshop with lots of after-hours fun, too. Take a couple of weeks of break from winter and take in a workshop at the same time. We can advise about low-cost accommodation on the Hilo (east) side. This will be a particularly timely workshop for anyone who wants to make an early start on their cordwood project in 2011.
Our Next Open House is October 2nd, 10 am to 4 pm, part of the National Tour of Green Homes. The free tour takes one to two hours. See a dozen different cordwood buildings, 10 different living roofs, the masonry stove, solar system, the bicycle pump system and the Earthwood Stone Circle. Visitors are welcome at other times, but call first at 518-493-7744 to make sure someone is here. There is no charge for short visits. Design consultations, personal instruction and comprehensive personal tours are conducted at a flat rate of $60/hour, both for individuals and groups not exceeding 12.

We are very proud of this new CD. done in Power Point. (You can play it on your 'puter whether you have Power Point or not.) The presentation has 106 color images of special design features, bottle-ends, cordwood textures and the like. A 5000-word commentary tells about the features and how to do them, including a section on various ways of making bottle-ends. The CD is just $20 plus $3 shipping in the U.S. ($5 to Canada). Earthwood Step by Step CD, is now available. This building manual is a 110-page, 100-image. 7500-word Power Point presentation. This Power Point CD can be shown on computers made since 1998 (including Windows 98, Second Edition) whether or not you have a Power Point program. (A Power Point reader is included.) You can view, project or print it. This CD expands and updates the slides or prints (60 captioned images) which we used to offer. This CD will really help anyone wanting to build an Earthwood-type home, one or two stories. It also covers the 16-sided post-and-beam frame. It should be used in combination with my book Earth Sheltered Houses and the Earthwood Plans (see below.) Price reduced from $45 to $36 + $3 shipping = $39 (See order form, Order Books and Videos.) The Cordwood Masonry Special Effects CD ... is ready at last! CDs can be projected on a screen with a Power Point projector, or viewed on your computer. architect-stamped plans are not listed on the Books and Videos pages of this
website. We have offered them for many years through our 8-page Books, Plans,
and Videos brochure, available from us at Earthwood. Please call us at

with your snail mail address, if you would like a copy of our brochure. The
plans, by the way, are $195, including postage and my book, Earth
Sheltered Houses, which details the step-by-step
construction of the Earthwood home. The plans now include a
10-page packet about how to incorporate a 16-sided timber frame in the
external walls. This additional material is not stamped by the architect,
but should make your local code enforcement officer happy. The frame is
easily incorporated into the plans, as many have done throughout

The Complete Cordwood DVD price reduced! This DVD combines all the material of our two cordwood videos with new material about the 16-sided frame, cement retarder, and the use of paper-enhanced mortar. Plus, there is a new 78-image "slideshow." All of this stuff is fully indexed for ease of access. The cost was reduced (in January, 2008) by $5 to $39 (plus postage).
