Three Day Cordwood. Morning sessions on Friday and saturday include cordwood theory, slide presentations, and discussion of the three styles of cordwood construction: built-up corners (stackwall), round houses, and cordwood as infilling within a post-and-beam framework. The kinds of wood and how long to dry them is covered, as well as various alternative mortar mixes. Installing doors and windows is detailed, as is cordwood masonry “special effects.” Afternoons on Friday and Saturday are devoted to practical, hands-on work sessions Brian Ferguson’s house just outside of Leadville, Colorado. Sunday is an all-day hands-on practice day with Rob and Jaki Roy, plenty of individual instruction. We will go until 5 pm on Sunday, but those who have a middle distance to travel may leave at 3 pm, as we will have gone over all the practical instruction by that time. Brian offers free practice on-site the next day, Monday, July 30th. This workshop gives the student a strong introduction to this ancient building technique.
